TAN and Collection Number (TAN) is mandatory 10 digit alpha number required to be obtained by all persons who are responsible for Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) or Tax Collection at Source (TCS) on behalf of the Government.

Every Assessee is responsible to deduct TDS is required to apply for TAN and shall quote this number in all TDS return, TDS payments and any other communications regarding TDS with income Tax department. Individuals who are salaried are not required to obtain TAN or deduct tax at source. However, a proprietorship business and other entities (i.e., Private Limited Company, Limited Liability Partnership, etc.,) must deduct tax at source while making certain payment like salary, payments to contractor or sub-contractors, payment of rent exceeding Rs.1,80,000 per year, etc. On deducting tax at source, the entity registered for TAN will issue a TDS Certificate as proof of collection of tax.

Validity

Once a TAN is issued, it is valid for lifetime. However, TDS Filings must be made quarterly on the 15th day of July, October, January and May. Non-filing of TDS filings within the due date will attract a penalty.

Required

Salaried individuals are not required to deduct tax at source. However, individuals running a proprietorship are required to obtain TAN and deduct tax at source when required.

In case duplicate TAN has been allotted, an application may be made for cancellation of the TAN which has not been used in the ‘Form for Changes or Correction in TAN’ which can be downloaded from NSDL-TIN website or may be procured from TIN-FCs or other vendors.
An allotment letter is dispatched by NSDL at the address provided in Form 49B.

15th of every July, October, January, and May are the due dates for filing quarterly TDS return. Any delay in furnishing your return will result in a penalty of Rs 200 per day not exceeding the total amount of TDS for the quarter.
TAN or Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is a 10 digit alpha numeric number required to be obtained by all persons who are responsible for deducting or collecting tax. Duplicate TAN is a TAN which has been inadvertently obtained by a person who is responsible for deducting/collecting tax and who already has a TAN allotted to him. It is illegal to possess or use more than one TAN. Different branches/divisions of an entity may, however, have separate TANs. 
Following documents are required for TAN Registration: COI, PAN Card of company (In case of Company). Pan Card of proprietor, Address Proof (In case of Proprietorship). Partnership deed, PAN Card of partners and Address proof of partners (In case of Partnership).
